Finished carving my first set of braces today. Everything went fairly smooth. In fact, I finished much sooner than I had anticipated. You know, it was kind of strange. The pile of shavings on the floor always seemed a wee bit bigger in the morning than when I shut down for the night. Go figure.

Noob tip – check the wood grain of your brace stock before you glue it up and you can orient the grain in the same direction of your primary chisel strokes.

Wow, what a beautiful back!
And are those tone fairies I see peering over the top?

Yeah, I caught those little guys tweaking the braces one morning when I came down to the shop a little earlier than usual. They’re a bit camera shy though. They were taking my little ibex plane through it’s paces.

The b&s set is a spalted myrtle set from Bob. I’m looking forward to seeing them together with the figured walnut I have for the bindings.

That is great craftmanship right from the get go Doug, congrats on the very neat job!

Carving and shaving the braces is also my favorite part of the build, it always feels like i'm transporting myself to another era where the artists were predominant!

That spalted myrtle is just awesome looking, can't wait to see that box closed to see that combo better!

Thanks for sharing!

Serge
